An evening of networking, news and the opportunity to meet those involved at the heart of the sustainable food movement in London

London Food Link is an active network of organizations and individuals: local businesses, charities and organizations, farmers, food writers and food growers; caterers, cooks and community food projects in London that are working to improve the sustainability of the capital’s food sector.

Chat with the luminaries of London’s sustainable food scene and hear the latest news and projects. We will have 15 speakers and hot vegan food provided by the wonderful Happy Kitchen with a cask of North London Redemption Brewery's Pale Ale at the inspiring FARM:shop Dalston. The FARM:shop is an urban food 'hub', cafe and arts venue complete with mini 'aquaponic' fish farms, rooftop chicken coops, indoor allotments and polytunnels.

Talks will begin from 17:00 with networking from 18:30-ish.

There will be 5 minute presentations from a variety of interesting food based projects. You may also bring along materials to display on the networking table.
Speaker line up so far:

You May Have Won This Round...

Some cool doing business as images:

You May Have Won This Round...
doing business as
No you didn't...

I haven't paid a parking ticket in Chicago since 1986.

I knew this day would come.

I had some business at the airport.

Where the City was waiting for me.

It was a freakin' trap I swear to gahd.

That parking garage was loaded with cars that had been booted.

Gave me an 'ominous' feelin' just seein' it.

In the movies I think they call that 'foreboding' or something.

I knew the gig was up.

I was caught with my pants down and treated to a little 'municipal morning love' courtesy of the City of Chicago.

A special kind of 'Chicago-Love' if you will.

I was dreading what this one was gonna cost me as I walked to the convenient 'revenue cashier' located right next to the parking garage at the airport.

I whipped out my credit card and told 'the man' that I was caught and now it was time to 'pay the piper.'

You can't get mad about these things you know?

I deserved it.

You 'do the crime' you gotta 'pay the fine' or something like that.

A thousand bucks and change.

Definitely not the way you wanna start your day.

I asked the man how many tickets they had me on.

'Nine' he said.

'Suckas' I said as I paid the bill.

'How far back do they go' I asked him.

'To 2001' he said as he read from his computer screen.

Three vehicles back.

But the tickets I got between 1986 and 2001... fifteen years worth... the 'juvenile' years...

the years I really let 'em pile up...

dude said they don't exist any more.

Man... I thought I was in for three to five grand.

He asked me if I wanted to make a 'payment plan.'

'I couldn't pay the tickets... I'm sure I won't comply with the payment plan' I said 'just do me now.'

I made sure that I got a receipt that said I was all paid up.

The thing that's just not fair to the 'Everyday Joe' is that being a 'corporation' and basically that my life is all business...

I can write this shit off...

thanks to 'Luminous Flying Helgramite Industries'...

pay for it with 'pre-tax dollars' and basically get a discount of fifty percent.

It's a cost of doing business.

Like when I get arrested for one of my company vehicles not having its emissions test done.

Even though it's been unregistered and sitting in the junkyard for five years after getting wrecked.

I've got nothing to complain about.

I really just hope that these people don't end up running health care.

Then going to the doctor will feel about as good as going to get your drivers license renewed.

And after you get stitched up or whatever...

you'll hobble out to the parking lot where you'll find a boot on your car.

It's all just 'a system.'

It's My Kind of Town

For the longest, all my business cards have been glossy and smooth, but as I began to run out of stock, I decided to make the jump to canvas cards — and I'm totally loving the change. I gues sit's because I'm such a texture guy, but canvas cards just feel better, and the sublte weaving looks really nice.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share.

Are Anglo Irish Bank Going Into The Restaurant Business?
business banking
I saw this planning notice posted at 51-52 Mary Street and it appears to be fairly recent (23/July/2010). No doubt there will be a "Good" restaurant and a "Bad" restaurant.

Anglo Irish Bank Corporation is now a state-owned bank based in Ireland with its headquarters in Dublin.

The company mainly deals in business and commercial banking, with the result that it has only a limited retail presence in the major Irish cities. It also has wealth management and treasury divisions. Anglo-Irish has operations in Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Isle of Man.

Anglo Irish Bank's heavy exposure to property lending, with most of its loan book being to builders and property developers, meant that it was badly affected by the downturn in the Irish property market in 2008. In December 2008, the Irish government announced plans to inject €1.5bn of capital for a 75% stake in the bank, effectively nationalising it. The Dublin and London Stock Exchanges immediately suspended trading in Anglo Irish's shares, with the final closing share price of €0.22 representing a fall of over 98% from its peak.

On 16 January 2009, the Taoiseach Brian Cowen stated that is was "business as usual" at Anglo Irish Bank and that people should be reassured that the bank is solvent. Between June and September 2009, the Minister for Finance provided €4 billion in capital. In a statement on 30 March 2010, a day before Anglo Irish Bank reported its financial results, the Minister Of Finance, Brian Lenihan announced an injection of €8.3 billion into the bank, noting that a further €10 billion may be required at a later stage to cover future losses and ensure an adequate capital base.

Since the nationalization of Anglo Irish Bank a number of controversies have arisen over certain business practises & loans, including loans to directors, and loans to people associated with Brendan Murtagh, EMPG and the QUINN group.

On 31 March 2010, Anglo Irish Bank reported results for the 15 months to December 2009. Loss for the period were €12.7 billion, with an operating profit before impairment of €2.4 billion and an impairment charges of €15.1 billion driving the overall result. It is the largest loss in Irish corporate history. Total assets declined to €85.2 billion at the end of 2009 from €101.3 billion in September 2008.

There's a restaurant called "Funkychef" in Pyrmont towards the Northwestern end of Harris Street (Close to the Casino). It is actually a catering business, website and alter-ego of one Lee Hardy.

They produce a t/a "Funky Lunchbox". Which contains varying things, which of late have been 2 "sandwichy things", 1 big or 2 small ricepaper rolls, a savoury tart of varying genres and a fruit kebab (With some pretty derned nice fruit on it!).

It's superb value and the quality is absolutely first rate.

Not open Monday lunchtime, alas.

I really hate that paper cutter after making tons of business cards late at night. It never cuts straight. I think crookedness is a curse for all paper cutters, although I'm not sure whether it's something inherent to the design or an emergent behavior. Is crookeness present from the outset or does it take some time and wear before it develops such behavior?

Alex is doing a great job though!
