This is the business class seat controls on Qatar Airways business
class seat. See that "bed" icon - we're talking 180 degrees flat bed.
So flat that when I pushed it just after takeoff I felt like I was
sleeping on a head down slope.

Oh and the dreams! I actally dreamed that I was dreaming about
sleeping on a plane, and then woke up to realize I was sleeping on my
side, tucked on with a blanket from the steward. The best 3 hour nap
on a plane I ever had.

I only wish the flight was longer (and when do you -ever- say that?!

Nice Small Business Loan photos

Small loans widen horizons for the poor

More money behind microfinance groups in Africa.

Does microfinance benefit economic development? When asked that question, James Mwangi, chief executive officer of Kenya’s Equity Bank, responds in the affirmative. With even small loans, he told Africa Renewal, “We have seen families graduate from micro-enterprises to semi-medium enterprises.”

Microfinance is a type of lending that targets low-income individuals who may find it difficult to borrow from regular banks because they lack collateral or a credit history. It is not new. Since the 1970s non-governmental groups have given small loans to poor people, especially women and those in the informal sector, to meet basic needs or to start up or expand businesses.

A suggested manifesto for #occupywallst. Text in NOTES and below.
small business loan
EDITOR NOTE: Errors in spelling and punctuation are mine alone.

Our 'specific' demands:

- Accountability
- Transparency
- Regulatory Reform
- Economic Fairness

Here are some suggestions for a manifesto for the Occupy Wall Street protests, which are currently taking place. The manifesto attempts to summarize common concerns about current banking practices and articulate a new agenda for a better system. (The banks are busy lobbying lawmakers and the Administration every day. The public must be given equal access to demand a better system.)*

==A Manifesto for Better Banking==

(The current banking system is both a cause and an intrinsic part of our current economic and political crisis.) The system encourages excessive risk and profit taking, and discourages long term sustainable investment and lending practices, and marginalizes the poorest and most needy from the banking system altogether. (Worst of all, the risk - and thus profit - are effectively insured by the taxpayer. The public is in effect subsidizing Wall Street profits.)*

We do not hate bankers, but we hate the system. It is time to change it. We have five key demands and proposals. These are not only for the government to adopt; everyone across the country, who wants to change the system can help to(o?). (We demand a better banking system - one where risk is not passed to the taxpayer, but which supports sustainable enterprise) and embodies values other than pure profit-making.

(1. The Past. We demand an independent inquiry into the credit crisis, and, if necessary, prosecutions of those guilty of deception or fraud. The inquiry must name names, identify lessons and hold those responsible properly to account.)*

(2. The Future. We demand effective banking legislation to curb excessive and risky lending, but to sustain credit for businesses, particularly small businesses, in lean times.)*

3. In particular, these reforms must include the following: requirements for greater high-quality capital reserves: the separation of retail from investment banking: legislation to encourage and support local, cooperative banking, and micro-credit for those routinely denied loans and banking services.

(4. The Politics. One problem of the current and unjust system is that the big banks enjoy unequaled access to the political system. This tilts the political system to provide for their needs over others. We demand equal access:)* in particular the Administration must provide a full list of every meeting with representatives of Wall Street banks with the White House, Fed and other government officials. We demand equal access to put the public's requirements on the table.

5. We encourage everyone to demand but also adopt "better banking". We should withdraw our money from those banks that are agressively lobbying for their own interest over the public's (JP Morgan Chase is a particular example). We should instead deposit our money in cooperative and community banks, and credit unions. (We shall also work, with bankers and other supporters, to establish a new national cooperative bank, owned by and run for its depositors and borrowers, not its share-holders.)

You are invited to stay and browse through my photostream. Here's a quick index to my Flickr site:

Automobile Photographs: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Central Illinois (except Springfield): Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I've photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "counrtyside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

Beyond Central Illinois: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I've put together:

Barbers & Barber Shops: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!: Included topics range from man's first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.

I added this to the group I formed "Homes of the Nouveau Riche" only to add contrast to the group. Mr. Morse was "Old Money", he was well educated and was a fine painter.
His parents were dimayed at the thought of their son going around selling his portrait skills to the well-to-do set which he himself was also. It was a social fopaux, so his parents felt. His art skill in painting, portrait painting in particular, was impeccable.
You may, however know of this famous painting of paintings at the Louvre:

Portrait and Biological Record of Southeastern Kansas, Containing Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens of the Counties, Together with Biographies and Portraits of all the Presidents of the United States and The Governors of the State of Kansas. Chicago, Biographical Publishing Co. 1894.

Samuel Shaffer. The farming class of America, and especially of southeastern Kansas, is notable for the degree of intelligence that is possessed by its representatives. Our subject is one of those men to whom this county owes much. He is a native of Pennsylvania, and was born in Blair County, June 1, 1844. His father, also a Pennsylvanian by birth, was born in Huntingdon County in 1808. His mother Catherine (Hillman) Shaffer, was a native of the same state. The family was among the oldest in Pennsylvania, and were prominent in all matters of public interest. Grandfather Shaffer was one of the Hessians in the Revolutionary War. The parents of our subject died in Pennsylvania.
Samuel Shaffer was one of eight children born to the above couple. He was reared on a farm, and early learned the rudiments of that occupation. In September, 1865, he was married to Miss Clara Henderson, a native of Jefferson County, Pa., and born August 5, 1845. In 1869 our subject and his estimable wife came west and for a time located in Kansas City. In February of the following year, they came to their present home, and at that time the country round their home was very wild, no house being in sight. They settled on one hundred and sixty acres, all of which is now improved, and by his earnest efforts Mr. Shaffer has one of the finest farms in the locality. He is engaged in general farming, and has been very successful in all his work.
In 1861, our subject ran away from home and enlisted in Company C, Third Pennsylvania Regiment, being then only sixteen years of age. He served all through the three months’ campaign under General Wynkoop. When discharged from service, he went to Washington and drove a team for the Government, and assisted in building many of the forts around Arlington. He went home during the winter and summer, and in August enlisted for nine months in Company B, One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Pennsylvania, as a private. He later became the Colonel’s Orderly. He took part in the battles of Antietam and Chancellorsville, besides doing other active service. He was discharged at the end of the service and went home. The next summer he again enlisted, becoming a volunteer in Company B, Two Hundred and Eighth Pennsylvania Division. He was in the charge of Petersburgh, Va., under Butler April 2, 1865, and was also present at the surrender of Lee. At the time of the Grand Review at Washington, D. C., he belonged to the First District, Ninth Army Corps. He was mustered out of service June 1, 1865, having served a little over two years.
Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer are the parents of seven children, six of whom are now living: Minnie Kate, Robert, Rosa Ellen, S. B., Jr., Rolla Emery and Gertrude. William is deceased. The children have had the best educational advantages. Miss Minnie K. was a student at the business college of Topeka, and is now a practical stenographer, type-writer and telegraph operator. She took in short hand the last speech made in the county by Senator Plumb.
Politically, Mr. Shaffer is a Republican, and has taken an active part in all the work of that party. He has been a member of the School Board, and has frequently been a delegate at conventions. He was Sheriff of the county for four years. Our subject is a member of Antietam Post, G. A. R. , at Parsons, and is also one of the Patriarchs of America.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Counterfeit goods expert Speaks to Vancouver business community

The etched printing on those little blue "Viagra" pills looked a little too well defined. That is because-- after analysis-- those pills were counterfeit, made of cement, a representative of the British Columbia Pharmacy Association told counterfeit expert Rob Calia.

Calia, who leads the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's anti-counterfeiting and piracy team, and the Chamber's counterfeiting and piracy business and consumer education division, was in Vancouver January 27 telling the local business community how increasingly-aggressive counterfeiters are responsible for robbing legitimate businesses of intellectual property and sales of legitimate goods totaling 0 billion. Based on findings in the recent Open Consultation process, this year's Action Line Facilitation meeting on e-business (C7) focuses on electronic commerce (e-commerce) for development. E-commerce is rapidly expanding, but the uptake in many developing countries remains relatively low, especially for SMEs. This session considers the opportunities, barriers and challenges to domestic and cross-border use of e-commerce for trading goods and services by SMEs. It also highlight good practices and promising developments that can serve as inspiration for all stakeholders. An interactive discussion will feature the views of panelists representing governments, international organizations and the private sector as well as comments from the floor. The last part of the session will seek to identify concrete steps forward to accelerate the development contribution of e-commerce.

Shoppers dig deep for Belfast donkey therapy
PRESS RELEASE from The Donkey Sanctuary
7 November 2012

The Donkey Sanctuary’s Donkey Assisted Therapy centre in Templepatrick near Belfast is more than £5,000 closer to purchasing a much needed donkey transport vehicle thanks to a donation from Bow Street Mall in Lisburn, County Antrim.

The charity, which provides over 6,000 riding therapy sessions for children with additional needs from across the province each year, has been fundraising for the £26,000 vehicle which will enable them to continue taking donkeys on outreach therapy visits to schools, care homes, hospices and hospitals.

Bow Street Mall in Lisburn adopted The Donkey Sanctuary’s Belfast Donkey Assisted Therapy centre as their charity of the year for September 2011 – September 2012. The Mall exceeded their £5,000 fundraising target for the year by presenting the charity with a cheque for £5,140.76 donated by shoppers and businesses.

Tina Symington, centre manager for The Donkey Sanctuary’s Donkey Assisted Therapy centre in Templepatrick, says:

“We are thrilled to have been Bow Street Mall’s charity of the year, and are so grateful for the generosity of shoppers and businesses who dug deep to put us £5,140.76 closer to being able to purchase a much-needed donkey transport vehicle for our Donkey Assisted Therapy centre in Templepatrick. Combined with our other fundraising activities, we have so far raised £16,000 towards the new vehicle, which will enable us to continue our outreach therapy service that is so beneficial to the elderly and those with additional needs. We would like to thank all the staff at Bow Street Mall for their support and enthusiasm, and all the shoppers who donated their spare change to help us raise vital funds.”
